Live Music in GR

March 21, 2018 | By The Blehm Group

If you’ve lived in Grand Rapids long, you’re aware of the most popular places for live music in the city: 20 Monroe Live, Frederick Meijer Garden, and St. Cecilia Music Center. These venues are incredible for concerts, especially in the summer season. But where do you go if you just want a drink and some casual live music, no pre-planning involved? Grand Rapids has a few excellent options for spontaneous music seeking. Here are our top 5 picks.

  1. Founders Brewing Co
    235 Grandville Ave SW
    Grand Rapids, MI 49503
Founders is more than great beer and an amazing patio. Every Tuesday is open mic night at 8 PM, Thursdays and Saturdays have live music, and the 1st Sunday of the month features the Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Events are frequently free or discounted for mug club members. See an upcoming list of performers here

  1. SpeakEZ Lounge
    600 Monroe Ave NW
    Grand Rapids, MI 49503
SpeakEZ has an incredible menu that caters to all diet restrictions. To make SpeakEZ even better, they also offer live music with their incredible food. There is never a cover charge for their Wednesday and Sunday night shows and you’re sure to find something you love on their event calendar.
  1. The Pyramid Scheme
    68 Commerce SW
    Grand Rapids, MI 49503
The Pyramid Scheme is open 7 days a week with happy hour from 4-8PM every day of the week and additional drink specials throughout the week as well. They cater themselves as a music venue bringing in incredible talent often. This is a location where tickets likely need to be bought in advance, but the experience is much more intimate than a large venue like 20 Monroe. See a list of upcoming events here

  1. Billy’s Lounge
    1437 Wealthy St SE
    Grand Rapids, MI 49506
Do you love the blues? Head to Billy’s. They offer performances formal genres, but the blues are their signature pick. As a beer bar, their tap list is diverse including things like Bell’s Two Hearted, Angry Orchard Crisp Apple, and Miller Lite to cover all your bases. Shows are generally around 9 PM with a reasonable cover of $5 although that can change based on the show. See an upcoming list of performers headed to Billy’s.
